DigIndy Art Project:

Community Painting, Guichelaar Gallery group Exhibition, and Painted Manhole Covers

The Dig Indy Art Project is an annual collaborative art project, supported by Citizen’s Energy, that raises connection and awareness for the Dig Indy Project — a 3 billion dollar investment in Indiana water, sewer, and waterways. In 2020 artists created designs for man hole covers across the city.

Three designs by Carlie Foreman were selected and traced onto wood representing manhole covers. During a pop-up public space at Lockerbie Marketplace in Downtown Indianapolis, the public was invited to learn more about the DigIndy project and paint on the artist-designed mini-mural panels.

Once completed by the artists the mini-murals were shown at the Guichelaar Gallery on the campus of the Tube Factory Artspace.

Following the exhibition, the selected designs were painted a second time by the artist on man hole covers. These manhole covers were placed around the City of Indianapolis over active man holes located downtown, in parks, and near trails, as public art to raise awareness for the water infrastructure upgrades.
